Berlusconi ha tre settimane per mantenere la promessa

Rome, 10 August 2009 : "We are in the middle of August, but still there is no news on the payment of funds due from Italy to the Global Fund to fight AIDS and other serious pandemics: Silvio Berlusconi will keep his word? "asks today Marco De Ponte, secretary general of ActionAid.

At the G8 summit of L'Aquila, the Italian prime minister said that by August they would be brought into Italy in equal payments to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

But in the economic and financial programming document (DPEF) approved by the Council of Ministers on 15 July, there is no trace of this financing, or other signals were received to support the promise of the Prime Minister.

"The behavior of the Global Fund against Italy in the past has been spotty at best - remember De Ponte - with dangerous consequences for the funding of important projects and so on millions of patients."

Italy, led by the Berlusconi government, in fact, promoted the establishment of the Fund at the G8 summit in Genoa in 2001. Ma già nel 2004 e nel 2006 l’Italia mancò di pagare le quote dovute. Nel 2007 il governo di Romano Prodi pagò 410 milioni di euro con cui vennero saldati arretrati e anticipata la quota del 2008. Tornato in carica il governo Berlusconi, i versamenti si sono nuovamente interrotti.

«Questo andamento altalenante del nostro paese riduce l’efficacia dell’azione contro le grandi pandermie. Per fermare il meccanismo di propragazione del virus dell’HIV-AIDS – spiega De Ponte - occorrono cure continue: i malati non possono certo permettersi un anno di sospensione dei trattamenti».

«Entro il 31 agosto l’Italia deve onorare il suo impegno e versare quanto dovuto al Global Found, nonché assicurare continuità nei versamenti per gli anni futuri – conclude De Ponte – ne va della sorte di milioni di persone malate ma anche della credibilità del nostro paese e del primo ministro».
